Daily Practice
Note: It is important to remember that children learn by repetition! Repeating the same name page or video is key for teaching preschoolers. We may get bored with it, but they love it and will learn from the repetition. These Daily Practice resources can even be extended for use all week long, not just school days!

▸ Activity #3 – What’s an Insect?
Talk with your child about what makes an insect and insect! Ask them questions about what they think an insect it? Have they ever seen an insect? Do you know any insect names?
Discuss with your child that there are 4 things that make an insect an insect:
- They all have a hard outer skin (exoskeleton)
- They have three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen)
- They all have antenna (they use these to feel and smell)
- They all have six legs.
Some insects have wings connected to their thorax, that allows them to fly. But not all insects fly.
Print the “Insect Jar Identification” Worksheet. Having your child keep in mind the above four items that makes an insect and insect, have them draw a line from the insects to the jar. If the animal is not an insect, leave it alone.

▸ Activity #1- Phonics Review – same activity as last week, but with different sounds
**NOTE: If your child is not ready to write letters yet (which is TOTALLY OK!), look at the second page of the “Initial Write In Animals” worksheet. Follow the same steps below, but have your child circle the correct letter instead of writing it.
Print the “Initial Sound Color and Write” Worksheet. Look at the letter on the left. What sound does it make? What picture begins with that sound? Color the picture. Say the word. Stretch the word saying each sound. Write each sound, spelling the word.
Example:
What letter do you see? (answer: c)
What sound does c make? (your child may say all the sounds c makes, but encourage them to think of the first sound)
Say the name of each picture (can, ball, duck). Which picture begins with the sound /c/?
Can! Right.
Stretch the word can. /c/ /a/ /n/ can. (use your fingers to stretch each sound. Point to each finger as you say the sound.)
What letter says /c/ /c/? (Answer: c)
What letter says /a/ /a/? (Answer: a)
What letter says /n/ /n/? (Answer: n)
What does a ‘c’ look like? How do we write a ‘c’? (Feel free to write the letter on a different paper (white board or chalk board) for them to see. Drawing specific attention to the way you are forming the letter.), What does an ‘a’ look like? Write it. What does an ‘n’ look like? Write it.
Celebrate with your child!!! They are spelling words! Whoo hoo!

▸ Activity #3 – Insects
Go on a walk or take a walk around your backyard. Print and take your “Insect Observations” worksheet outside with you. Have your child look for an insect, and fill out their “Insect Observations”. Talk together with them about their findings!
